Stanley Perlman, M.D., Ph. D.

Dr. Perlman received his Ph .D. in Biophysics from the Massachusetts Institut e of Technology and MD from the University of Miami School of Medicine. He subsequently received several prestigious fellowships. He is presently the Mark Stinski Chair in Virology, Professor of Microbiology & Immunology and Professor of Pediatrics at the College of Medicine, University of Iowa. He has studied coronaviruses for 38 years! Over this period Dr. Perlman pioneered outstanding research in the genetics of the viruses as well as the host immuneresponse studying both mouse models as well as clinical human disease. Recently, Dr. Perlman and his collaborators, advanced another game changer: this time for SARS-CoV-2 (the causative agent of Covid-19) by developing a mouse infection model that can be easily established with high rates of lung infection and pneumonia and finally allows, systematic assessment of (i) viral mutants, (ii) host factors, (iii) new vaccines and therapies including biologics (such as convalescent plasma) as well as drugs (Cell 2020 https://doi.org/10.1016/j.cell.2020.06.010).
